Dr. Johnston is a family physician, Scientific Director, and Associate Vice President of Research at the Institut de Savoir Montfort, as well as an Associate Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Ottawa. Over the past 16 years, Dr. Johnston has excelled as a clinician-researcher, focusing on integrating research into clinical care with a particular emphasis on performance measurement and digital patient outreach and engagement as well as concussion care.
Dr Johnston leads the OSSU-funded Initiative Francophone des Communautés Ontariennes Francophones Facilitant la Recherche Équitable (COFFRE). The goal of this team is to build opportunities and capacity for francophone patients to shape the future of healthcare by engaging with research teams.
Dr. Johnston Co-leads the Canadian Primary Care Information Network (CPIN), which builds the capacity of primary care practices to digitally engage patients and collect patient-reported measures using practice-based IT solutions. This program of research which is building strategies to sustainably include the patient voice in a learning health system for primary care has received funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Health Canada, the Canada First Research Excellence Fund, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the College of Family Physicians of Canada, and Montfort Hospital.
